The JCU English Language Centre High School Preparation course is specially designed to prepare overseas students with English and the skills they need to join an Australian high school.
- High School Preparation (HSP) Townsville Only (12-17 years)

JCU-ELC offers a protective environment where students can become accustomed to a new culture and build
confidence before moving on to a completely Australian study environment. The course focuses on developing
the language and cultural survival skills necessary for academic and social success at high school. Students practice:
- Academic reading and writing
- Speaking and giving presentations
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Content subjects such as maths, science, art, geography and history
- Project research skills
- Study skills
- Sporting and social activities
Assessment
Student progress is assessed regularly and copies of assessments are sent to parents and prospective high schools. Regular homework, monthly exams and a progress report every five weeks ensure that students are kept on track. The course includes supervised study in our modern learning centre and weekly activities. In order to prepare students for the cultural differences of life at an Australian high school, they are given opportunities to meet local and overseas students who are currently studying at Australian high schools.

These are designed as an optional tutorial program that is conducted over 2-6 week blocks. The blocks
are conducted over the Queensland school holidays and are particularly focused on the individual student’s needs.
